Hard work, in and of itself, gets you nothing. Nothing. Under any circumstance, in any political system, in any endeavor. You work hard because that’s the basic requirement for existence on Earth. People work hard every day and have no more than they had the day before, the week before, the year before. You prevent disaster by making the most of what you have, not by leaving it to rot in pursuit of more. If you succeed it is by having the good fortune to be born with certain financial and social resources, to be the beneficiary of profitable opportunities, or both. Talent, persistence, and intelligence are afterthoughts, and don’t count at all without the first two factors, which fall under “The Grace of God.”
